The Local Government Elections Process Begins Tomorrow

Thursday 22 July 2010

Friday the 23 July 2010 sees the first milestone of this year’s local government elections with nominations opening for Mayor, Councillors, Motueka and Golden Bay Community Boards and the District Health Board.

Nominations forms for all positions are available from the Tasman District Council offices in Richmond. They must be returned completed by 12 noon on 20 August 2010.

“All aspiring candidates need to be aware of the rigidly enforced timeframes as electoral officers have absolutely no leeway”, said Tasman Electoral officer Lloyd Kennedy.

There are a number of requirements within the nomination process that may take time to arrange.

“It is advisable for all candidates to pick up the forms early and give themselves time to get the information, signatures and other material they need. We will always check the nomination form fully, and point out anything that is incorrect and needs changing before the nomination can be accepted.

“Candidates who leave it to the last minute may not have time to correct their forms, if they are incomplete, before the nomination period closes. There is no way we can grant exceptions to anyone.

“A great deal of information is available to candidates and electoral officers are more than happy to assist those with questions, however, the important message is - do not leave it to the last minute.”
