Tasman District Council Secures Retail Amenity in Mapua

Friday 20 December 2013

The Tasman District Council has exercised its option to purchase the building housing three of the major attractions to Mapua, the Golden Bear Brewery, Hamish’s Ice Cream and the Cool Change gallery.

As the landowner, the Council has previously subleased the space to the current building’s owner, Mapua Holdings Ltd, who in turn has leased the space to the three tenants. A mix of outcomes sought by all involved has seen the Council exercise its option to purchase the property.

The option to purchase the building will allow all three tenants to have security of tenure prior to the lucrative summer season.

The Council has taken this step to ensure it maintains access to variety amenities at this popular summer destination for all the family as well as the ability to cater for the wider community  in future developments in this part of the Mapua Wharf precinct.

The funding for the purchase comes from previous and current property sales by the Council.

The option to purchase has been taken up immediately and is supported by the Mapua Wharf Working Party – a group endorsed by the Council made up of residents and business within and near the precinct.
