Tasman Parks Become a Magical Playground

Friday 23 June 2017

Update 23 June 2017 - Magical Parks extended until 30 June 2018

28 February 2017

From this Saturday, several Tasman reserves will become a new type of playground with the help of virtual reality.

To coincide with Parks Week from 4 to 12 March, kids and families can play Magical Park at seven parks around the District.

What is Magical Park?

Magical Park is a virtual reality game that transforms a normal park into a digital fantasy playground with the help of a mobile data or Wifi connection.

Simply download the app via a smartphone or tablet, head to the park and enter the fantasy world.

Geo AR Games chief executive Melanie Langlotz said, “Kids get to interact and explore a fantasy world where they have to herd kittens, run away from the bad fairy or come face to face with a giant T-Rex – all in a local park using your smart phone or tablet.”

New Zealand Recreation Association chief executive, Andrew Leslie, said he was looking forward to seeing Magical Parks springing up all over Australia and New Zealand during Parks Week.

“We believe combining outdoor play with technology can motivate kids to get off the couch and be more physically active. We can’t reverse technology or progress, nor should we try. What we can do is create healthy relationships with technology by using the screen to get kids outdoors and moving around.”

Which parks can I visit?

Magical Park is aimed at 6 - 11 year olds and will be available at the following parks:
