Queen Street Upgrade Resumes 7 February 2018

The remaining work needed to greatly increase central Richmond’s flood resilience and upgrade old and undersized water infrastructure in Queen Street is set to resume on Wednesday 7 February 2018.

Construction on the major works for the Queen Street Upgrade project began in February 2017 and ran through until a planned break for the busy summer retail season over December and January.

Upgrade project manager Jeff Robinson says the remaining works, which were always planned to continue into 2018, will begin next Wednesday and are due for completion at the end of May.

“The first three stages of the project are complete, from Gladstone Road up past Sundial Square. The remaining three stages run from Sundial Square up to the Salisbury Road roundabout.

“On Wednesday, contractor Downer will begin work on Stage 4 – that’s the area from Sundial Square up to the Warring carpark entrance. It’s likely to be a busy period on the roads as many schoolchildren are also returning for the year, so it’s important people are aware that part of Queen Street will be closed to vehicles.”

Jeff said while vehicle access would be restricted, Queen Street businesses remained open and there was carparking both on much of the street itself and in the off-street public carparks, which have entrances from nearby Oxford Street, Cambridge Street and McIndoe Place.

“We appreciate the continued patience of businesses and the public as we enter the next stage of this project, which will bring our ageing infrastructure up to capacity for our growing urban community, reduce the risk of serious flooding for businesses on Queen Street, and create a modern, vibrant streetscape. The benefits will be felt for a long time to come, so I hope people can look forward to the final result, and continue to support our local retailers, cafes and the like while we work towards that goal.”

Jeff said minor tweaks to the construction programme and design of some elements over the summer break had been made to address some of the challenges the project experienced in 2017. “For example, we have redesigned the placement of the stormwater pipe to lift it out of the soft clay we encountered in the area around Sundial Square – that means we won’t need to carry out noisy sheetpiling in the next phase of works.”
