Pakawau Beach Esplanade Reserve – proposal to build a seawall

Notified resource consent applications under the Resource Management Act 1991

Submissions close at 4.00 pm on Monday 18 June 2018.

The Pakawau Community Residents’ Association has applied to the Tasman District Council for resource consents to construct a rock revetment-type seawall on Council esplanade reserve land and the coastal marine area at Pakawau. The proposed seawall will be about 345 metres long, adjacent to 1118 to 1154 Collingwood-Puponga Main Road.  It is intended to protect the adjacent private land from coastal erosion.

If the resource consents are granted, it does not mean that Council as landowner will approve the seawall occupying the reserve. That is considered by a separate process under the Reserves Act 1977, and the process would only start after the decision on this application for resource consents was known.

Where is it?

Pakawau Beach Esplanade Reserve and coastal marine area

Legal description: Lot 20 DP 5716 Blk XVI Pakawau S D Esplanade Reserve, and part of the common marine and coastal area.

What does it need resource consent for?

The proposed rock revetment-type seawall needs the following three consents:

  • To disturb the coastal marine area as a result of the works associated with the erection of the seawall, and to occupy the coastal marine area with part of the seawall (coastal permit application RM171015)
  • To erect a 345 metre long seawall structure in the Open Space Zone (land use consent application RM171289)
  • To undertake land disturbance activities exceeding an area of 1000 square metres within 200 metres of the coastal marine area, over a 12 month period (land use consent application RM171290)
