River Water Quality Investigations in Specific Catchments

Investigations are carried out regularly by Council in response to a known water quality issue. The aims of most investigations are to determine the impact on the water quality or aquatic ecology of a particular land use activity and the source of a particular contaminant. This usually involves sampling at many sites in the catchment, upstream and downstream of areas or activities suspected as causing the issue and sometimes the deployment of continuous sampling equipment.

Once the major sources of contamination have been discovered, or at least the sub-catchment or tributaries with the poorest water quality have been defined, this information is shared with the relevant landowners/resource users. The ultimate outcome objective is to jointly come up with a plan to improve water quality and then implement this action plan.

There are six areas where investigations have been  carried out to date.
