The Aorere River
The Aorere River is one of the larger waterways in Tasman. Within the catchment there are approximately 30 farming operations. In 2005 the shellfish farms that operate within 5km of the river mouth became very concerned about the effect of high levels of disease-causing organisms on the viability of their business.
Investigations found that the majority of this contamination was coming from the pastoral farming operations. Most of these pastoral farmers have invested heavily in improving the environmental performance of their operations and farm environmental plans assist them in this process.
