Te Kakau Stream, Takaka
This is a small, springfed stream, which flows just to the west of Takaka’s Commercial Street and into the Takaka River. It was a small Maori eel fishery area and is an outdoor playground for local children to boat, fish and swim in.
However it has suffered from weed invasion, pollution and neglect. A management plan was drafted in 2004 that aims to facilitate increased public use and enjoyment of the stream environment through a combination of actions, including revegetation, rubbish removal and prevention, minimisation of contaminant run-off, and weed control. The local community has participated in the management plan process and on-the-ground work. Water quality investigations and fish surveys were undertaken in 2006-07. Trials of different methods of aquatic weed control were trialled in 2007-08.
