Mayors Support Samoan Tsunami Victims
Mayors support aid relief for Samoan Tsunami Victims

Tuesday 13 October 2009

Mayors Richard Kempthorne (Tasman District Council) and Kerry Marshall (Nelson City Council) are encouraging members of the community to join them in supporting aid relief to Samoa following the devastating tsunami that left many Islanders homeless.

Pacific Island representatives from Tasman and Nelson have organised a series of events to bring the community together, and drop off points for people to donate the much-needed building materials to help re-establish housing and infrastructure in Samoa.

The Nelson Tasman Samoan Tsunami Aid Relief Fund (STAR) has been fully endorsed and supported by both Mayor Kempthorne and Mayor Marshall.
“It’s heartening to see members of our local community pull together at a time like this to bring practical aid to those in need.” says Mayor Kempthorne. “I have Samoan friends in the Nelson Tasman community who have lost family members. It makes you realise how close to home this tragedy has hit.”

As well as asking for cash donations, through any branch of the ANZ bank, STAR is asking people to give building supplies and tools. These supplies will be shipped to Samoa. There are several drop-off points where these goods can be donated:

• Gardiner Engineering Limited, 40 Beach Road Richmond
• Motueka Recreation Centre
• 9 Piko Street, Victory Square, Nelson (small goods only here please)

The drop off points are available during office hours.

Other events that are being organised include a “Free Hairdressing Day” at Ruby Tuesday in Richmond. On Sunday the 18 October 2009, all profits from Ruby Tuesday’s will be donated to the STAR appeal – but bookings are recommended! There will be a Samoan dance at the Victory Community Centre on the 24 November 2009, and a Memorial Services at the Community Church, Nile Street on the 25 November 2009.

Any members of the public who would like more information should contact Sonny Alesana on Ph. 027 254 5911.
