Project update - March 2008

The investigations into the Upper Lee Catchment to provide water storage for long term irrigation and community supplies in the Waimea Basin has started with many aspects of the four major components ie. Engineering - water resources investigations; environmental investigations; land tenure - economic assessment - water allocation and planning options; community liaison and dissemination investigation under way. Key field work in progress is the geological/geotechnical investigations of the area and the selection of a preferred dam site. The current geotechnical work is to decide a best option between two dam types for the area ie. An earth fill dam versus a concrete faced rockfill dam. Availability of suitable material in the localised area would be a key driver for the dam type recommendation. All geotechnical work has been peer reviewed as part of the project requirements. Ecological field work in relation to low flows, habitat and botany has started. This work also includes a more comprehensive cultural impact assessment by iwi in relation to the dam and its effects. The committee has received two progress reports in this period from the consultants ie, December 2007 and February 2007, with further progress reports due in April and June 2008. The December newsletter was mailed out (>1000 copies) to all water users on the Waimea Plains and landowners in the Wairoa/Lee and Brightwater areas and also provided to sector groups and statutory bodies. The newsletter is also available below.
