Why are we making this change?

A new water restrictions protocol will provide greater certainty about how and when we will impose and escalate restrictions for everyone connected to a public water supply. The existing bylaw outlines how we will provide, manage and protect the public water supply and its network infrastructure. The bylaw also outlines Council’s authority to prohibit and restrict the use of public water supply because of drought or emergency.

However, the existing bylaw does not provide much guidance on how and when we will impose restrictions in times of water shortage or disruption.

This new approach will:

  • Guide us when making decisions about water restrictions
  • Provide clear advice to customers about what is expected in times of water shortage
  • Allow residents and businesses to prepare and make plans to adapt to using less water

We all have a responsibility to safeguard our water resources. Both the Council and community need to be pro-active and carefully manage water resources for present and future generations.

The proposed addition of a Water Restrictions Protocol clearly outlines how we intend to address water shortages and disruptions in the future. Everybody has a part to play.
