Nelson Tasman Regional Economic Development Strategy

This page explains the purpose of the Regional Economic Develoment Strategy (REDS) and links to the full document.

The Nelson Tasman Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS), Regional Prosperity, draws on consultations with over 150 businesses, political and academic leaders from across our community. The report includes valuable overviews of the region’s key sectors and the economic infrastructure, and enhances our understanding of the levers to boost our regional economy.

The 2014 report highlights:

  • The opportunity to build on Nelson’s established position as Australasia’s largest deep sea fishing port and promote the Aquaculture Park developments, through the establishment of the Marine City initiative;
  • The importance of moving forward with the Waimea Dam before water shortages affect our horticultural production on the Waimea Plains and limit key industrial users manufacturing capability;
  • The opportunity to build closer alignment between the region’s education sector and our core growth industries;
  • The value of closer alignment between our tourism, primary producers and others in promoting our region globally and within New Zealand;
  • The activity that is already well underway with the development of a regional digital strategy.
