The area of the reserve closest to the main entrance on Aranui Road is planted with a variety of native and introduced tree species.

History

The Wells family gifted the reserve to the government in 1977 as a ‘contribution to the preservation of New Zealand’s natural heritage’. The reserve was vested in the Council as a recreation reserve in 1989. A plaque commemorating Bernard Wells is located near the entrance to the reserve.

Management

A management plan was approved for the reserve in 1993 . It proposed the preparation of a development plan that would carry out the wishes of the Wells family to establish plantings of local native species and to maintain the area free of buildings.
