Decks Reserve, Motueka

Decks Reserve is situated between Wallace and Greenwood Streets in Motueka and is home to Kiyosato Gardens.

A path that encircles the green space links the play area at the western end with the picnic area and the Kiyosato Japanese Gardens that have been a stunning feature of the reserve since 2001.  The large playing field in the centre is a popular spot for informal sports like a game of touch rugby or family cricket.

History

Decks Reserve has been a popular part of the Motueka landscape since it became a reserve in 1954. The Motueka Borough Council purchased 3 acres, 1 rood (measurement of land) and 3.35 perches of land from the estate of Mrs Deck at that time. The land had a frontage on Greenwood Street and subsequent purchases up until 1983 saw the reserve increase in size to just over 2 hectares, and extend right through to Wallace Street.
