Amenities

Toilets (fully accessible)

Walking

Swimming

Beach

There are grassed areas with picnic tables, ideal for family gatherings, a road leading to a parking area and beach access and toilets and changing facilities.

Dog Prohibited Area

Dogs are prohibited on this reserve during summer months (1 December to 1 March), except between the hours of 5.00 am and 9.00 am.

There are many places within Tasman District to exercise your dog, both on and off the leash. Dogs are prohibited in several beach and reserve areas, and other areas require leash control.

Read more about Dog Exercise Areas

History

The reserve was set aside as a result of subdivision and was named in memory of former Waimea County Councillor, the late Alex Ryder, who represented the Motueka Riding in the days before the Tasman District Council came into being. Two other reserve areas have been added, one known as the Beaches and Bays area and the other is a wetland. Together they are collectively known as the Little Kaiteriteri Reserve.

The Little Kaiteriteri Reserve provides an important area of open space on the beachfront for all to relax and enjoy. It’s the perfect spot to experience the quieter side of Kaiteriteri.

Appleby Reserve, Richmond

Amenities

BBQ

Toilets

Swimming

River

Public toilets and changing rooms are located near the playcentre at the southern edge of the reserve. The reserve provides opportunities for sport, informal recreation and picnicking. The local school uses the sports field for football.

A raised stopbank bisects and is a prominent feature of the recreation reserve, protecting the grassed northwestern part of the reserve from flooding of the Waimea River. The southeastern part of the reserve is also predominantly grassed, but with several large macrocarpa trees in the southern corner and scattered willow trees along the river. A gravel road crosses the stopbank and provides access to the Waimea River.

History

The reserve was set aside in 1906 and has been used for a range of activities including camping. In 1991 a small part of the recreation reserve (1115 m2) was reclassified as a local purpose (site for playcentre) reserve. The Appleby Playcentre is now located on that reserve.

Management

A management plan was prepared for the reserve in 1990 and revised in 1992 . It proposed three main types of reserve use: sports fields on the main grassed area adjacent to the playcentre (northwest of the stopbank); a children’s play area southeast of the stopbank; and, a picnic and barbecue area beside the river. The plan also permitted the provision of recreation facilities and buildings, restricted vehicle access, proposed the planting of trees for shade and shelter, and prohibited camping.

Specimen Tree

A cypress (Cupressus sp.) tree on adjoining road reserve is listed as a Specimen Tree in the Proposed Tasman Resource Management Plan.

Amenities

Picnic

The area of the reserve closest to the main entrance on Aranui Road is planted with a variety of native and introduced tree species.

History

The Wells family gifted the reserve to the government in 1977 as a ‘contribution to the preservation of New Zealand’s natural heritage’. The reserve was vested in the Council as a recreation reserve in 1989. A plaque commemorating Bernard Wells is located near the entrance to the reserve.

Management

A management plan was approved for the reserve in 1993 . It proposed the preparation of a development plan that would carry out the wishes of the Wells family to establish plantings of local native species and to maintain the area free of buildings.

Brooklyn Recreation Reserve, Motueka

Amenities

Picnic

Playground

Toilet

Walking

The Reserve itself covers over four and half hectares, much of which is in forest. The land was set aside for public use in the 1950s and was classified as a recreation reserve in 1980. There’s a flat grassed area and gravel car park at the roadside and then the Reserve covers the foothills up to about 120 metres. On the flat area there are picnic tables, some swings, a see saw and a public toilet, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful family picnic.

Walking

The major drawcard for the Brooklyn Reserve is the walking track that starts at the car park and leads up to a fantastic look out, giving commanding views of the Motueka River Plain, Motueka and Tasman Bay. The track winds its way through the beautiful beech forest that remains on the foothills. There’s also regenerating forest dominated by kanuka.

Plantings

Many native species of plants and trees can be found within the Reserve and it is quite highly prized as an area with great conservation and regeneration potential. Some plantings on the Reserve have been planted by the pupils of Brooklyn School, who have been involved with Arbour Day planting projects.

Golf course

Golf Course

The Reserve is home to the nine-hole Takaka Golf Course and has been since 1962, when the land was leased to the Club by the Department of Lands and Survey. The part of the reserve that the course was built on was known locally as the Cherry Island Reserve because of the masses of wild cherry trees that grew there. The Rototai end of the golf course had been favoured by local Maori as a great spot to grow potatoes and kumara. It was also a popular camping place for families in the 1930's. However all that changed once the Takaka Golf Club secured its lease. The Club set about clearing 36 hectares of gorse lupin and manuka scrub. The pioneering spirit and dedication of Takaka Golf Club members over the years means the course is now in excellent grass and offers very good playing conditions.

Also making up part of the reserve is the historic Clifton Cemetery, a site of great significance to both Maori and Pakeha. It was the area's local importance that meant it was vested in Council as a Recreation Reserve in 1991.

The land for the hospital cemetery, as it was meant to become, was set aside when Clifton, then known as Waiwera, was surveyed in 1842.

History

Despite all the surveying Clifton never did blossom into a town but the cemetery was put to use. It is estimated that upwards of 150 people are buried there but many of the graves are unmarked. Some of these unmarked graves are for local Maori, some for the Europeans. Wateno, Rawiri, Mitchell, Raharon and Elliot are just a few of the local families whose ancestors were the earliest arrivals at the cemetery. The oldest marked headstone in the Clifton Cemetery is that of Agnes Gibson who died 14 February 1866. The cemetery was run by a series of Trustees and caretakers but has now been closed for some time. Only very occasionally have burials been held there to allow family members to rest in peace along side each other. At the celebration of 150 years of European settlement in the Clifton-Motupipi area in 1992 a memorial was unveiled that recognises the unmarked graves in the cemetery.

Alongside the cemetery, lovely picnic areas have been established so people can pause to enjoy the serenity the Clifton Recreation reserve can offer. There is also a spacious mown area for dog walking, impromptu games and family fun.

There's a wide variety of insect and bird life to be found in the area. With the rare Katipo spider and a threatened species of carabid beetle, being a couple worthy of note. There are also important wader bird roosting and breeding habitats in the area including a habitat for the banded rail.

Kiyosto Japanese Gardens

A path that encircles the green space links the play area at the western end with the picnic area and the Kiyosato Japanese Gardens that have been a stunning feature of the reserve since 2001. The large playing field in the centre is a popular spot for informal sports like a game of touch rugby or family cricket.

History

Decks Reserve has been a popular part of the Motueka landscape since it became a reserve in 1954. The Motueka Borough Council purchased 3 acres, 1 rood (measurement of land) and 3.35 perches of land from the estate of Mrs Deck at that time. The land had a frontage on Greenwood Street and subsequent purchases up until 1983 saw the reserve increase in size to just over 2 hectares, and extend right through to Wallace Street.

Amenities

Picnic

Walking

Dog Walking

Cycling

The most popular spots in Dellside include Reservoir Creek, the Jimmy Lee Creek Walkway and of course the aptly named Picnic Gully.

Walking

Dellside Reserve offers a great variety of walking tracks, ranging from easy 30 minute strolls to steeper, tougher tramps taking up to two hours. It has a diverse range of environments within one area: pine plantations, native forest and poplar woodlands. The walks that take you up to the fire lookout offer incredible views over Richmond and beyond. Some of the walking tracks can be steep and quite rough in places and not all creeks are bridged so strong footwear is recommended.

Dogs

Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash in some areas - doggy doo bags are provided to assist dog owners tidy up after their canine friends and keep the walking tracks clean for everyone.

Cycling

Cyclists are welcome on most Dellside tracks but some have been designated for walkers only so please keep an eye out for the signs relating to that.

History

Dellside was designated as a reserve in 1989 and has been evolving ever since. Two men who were instrumental in getting the Reserve established, Jack Rodman and Bob Williams were both honoured with plantings in their name on their retirement. There's a stand of Redwoods in honour of Mr Rodmans contribution and a stand of White Oaks in honour of Mr Williams.

Management

The reserve is maintained by Tasman District Council, with assistance from community groups and individuals:

The Cropp Place Neighbours

Keep Richmond Beautiful

Edward Baigent Reserve, Wakefield

Amenities

Picnic

BBQ

Toilets

Camping

The reserve is a popular camping and picnic area, providing recreational opportunities that complement those provided by other reserves in the Wakefield area. The reserve is visible from State Highway 6 and provides part of a scenic introduction to Wakefield for north-bound travellers.

Camping

A section of the reserve is maintained as mown grass with several large totara, kahikatea, and beech trees. Willow trees are present along the Eighty Eight Valley Stream boundary. This part of the reserve provides an attractive picnic and camping area, with a well-formed road from State Highway 6. Facilities include picnic tables and platforms, concrete fireplaces, metal barbecue stands, rubbish containers, and a toilet. Camping is permitted in the reserve but restricted to a two-night maximum stay.

Vegetation

The reserve supports a small stand of floodplain forest dominated by large totara, kahikatea, and matai trees. Other important trees present are large silver beech trees and a large pokaka tree. The understorey of the forest remnant is dominated by mahoe, Coprosma rotundifolia, and a range of small-leaved native species.

A report on the ecology of the reserve completed for the Council by Geoff Walls in 1998 identified several noteworthy species in the reserve, including the tall podocarp and beech trees listed above, the threatened shrub Teucridium parvifolium, native mistletoe (Ileostylis micranthus), and the shrub Melicytus “brockei”. The forest remnant is also listed in the inventory of tall forest stands collated by Park and Walls in 1978 , though has a relatively low rank due to its small size.

The forest remnant occupies approximately two-thirds of the area of the reserve.

Edward Baigent Reserve supports a small but important remnant of lowland alluvial forest. It is part of a group of small scattered native forest remnants in the Wakefield area that collectively provide important habitat for native birds such as kereru.

Management

A management committee, the Wakefield Bush Restoration Incorporated Society (established in March 2000), is working with the Council to assist with management of the reserve and to raise community awareness of its natural values. A notice board in Faulkner Bush Reserve provides details of current projects and contacts for the Society.

The reserve is predominantly grassed with trees and shrubs planted around its edges. It is surrounded by residential properties, except on its northern boundary where it adjoins rural land. A concrete path through the northern part of the reserve provides pedestrian access between Moffat and Pethybridge streets. Rugby goal posts are present at the southern end of the reserve.

Eginton Park provides an area of open space for informal recreation and provides useful pedestrian access between suburban streets. Some trees in the reserve have been planted in memory of people in the area.

History

The reserve is named after the Eginton family who farmed in the area, and particularly Mr. Wally Eginton who served as mayor to Motueka Borough after World War II.

Faulkner Bush, Wakefield

Amenities

Picnic

Playground

Walking

Walking

Faulkner Bush is one of the very few remaining areas of podocarp forest that once covered the Waimea Plains. A younger forest of Totara, Black Beech, Mahoe and Kanuka backs the tall and stately Kahikatea and Matai on the front terrace. Easily accessible walking tracks encourage you to take a stroll through the tranquil bush listening to the calls of tui and bellbirds and looking at lush vegetation. For the more energetic, the upper terrace track leads to a lookout with great views of the surrounding land and across Waimea Inlet to Nelson City.

Wakefield Bush Restoration Society

Wakefield Bush Restoration Society are a voluntary group that work on new plantings as well as reducing troublesome weeds like old mans beard and privet. The group gathers at the reserve on the second Saturday of every month for a 'weeding bee' from 10.00 am till 12 noon. Anyone who would like to help would be very welcom. The Wakefield Bush Restorers Group has a long-term plan of creating corridors of bush that will link the flat and hilly parts of the reserve and encourage the rich bird life to expand their habitat. School, Scout and Guide groups have also been involved through the years with planting and other work.

Controlled Dog Exercise Areas

Dogs may be exercised off the leash but should be kept under control on this reserve, except for the Leash Control Area, as defined on Schedule 1 below.

There are many places within Tasman District to exercise your dog, both on and off the leash. Dogs are prohibited in several beach and reserve areas, and other areas require leash control.

Firestones Reserve, Lee Valley

Firestones Reserve covers a series of broad river terraces between the Lee Valley Road and Lee River a few hundred metres upstream from the Meads Road Bridge. It lies just upstream from, and on the opposite side of the river from, Meads Recreation Reserve. The main public access to the reserve is from the Lee Valley Road.

A large part of the reserve is maintained as mown grass, though there are some significant stands of native vegetation along the river edge and patches of kanuka and totara scattered throughout the reserve. Dominant trees in the river edge forest are matai, totara, black beech, and kanuka. Also common are kahikatea, lemonwood, red beech, silver beech, pokaka, Lophomyrtus obcordata, miro, turepo, and willow. A diverse range of native species is present in the understorey of this forest remnant.

Amenities

Picnic

Swimming

Toilets

BBQ

A well-formed vehicle track provides access right through the reserve, including good access to the river. The reserve is a very popular recreation area, especially for swimming and picnicking during the summer months. It borders an attractive section of the Lee River with several swimming holes.

History

The former Waimea County Council purchased this area for a recreation reserve in 1976, and a draft management plan was prepared in 1985 . The plan proposed protection and enhancement of flora and fauna while providing recreational access to the Lee River. The plan proposed only limited development of the reserve as, at that time, there was the possibility that the area would be inundated following construction of a proposed dam downstream.

Beach Estuary

Boat Ramp

The reserve provides excellent opportunities for picnicking, swimming, fishing, bird-watching, and boat launching.

The reserve includes an area of mown grass surrounded by mature trees, including large maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) and gum (Eucalyptus sp.) trees, and smaller pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) and buddleia trees. Camping is prohibited on the reserve. The reserve provides access to Waimea Inlet, especially to the water-ski area in the main channel between the reserve and No Mans Island. Pacific oysters are present in the area, and signs in the reserve warn of the hazard posed by their shells on the foreshore. Grossi Point Recreation Reserve adjoins and links the two parts of the Grossi Point Esplanade Reserve.

Management

Important management issues include the protection of archaeological sites, improvement of the vehicle track, maintenance of the gravel boat ramp, and maintenance and eventual replacement of the larger trees.

Kina Recreation Reserve, Tasman

Amenities

Picnic

BBQ

Toilets

Walking

Swimming

Beach Estuary

Boat Ramp

Camping

Much of the reserve is low lying, covering vegetated beach gravel, and a small part of the reserve covers a raised terrace. Parts of the reserve are subject to flooding, and to coastal erosion during storms. A small remnant of mahoe-ngaio forest is present on the reserve. Other parts of the reserve are planted with ngaio, akeake, akiraho, and other native species, providing good shelter for recreation.

Facilities within the reserve include picnic tables, concrete fireplaces, toilets, a well and water supply. Camping is permitted on the reserve, though stays are limited to four nights (plus statutory holidays).

Management

A management plan was prepared for the reserve in 1988 , when the Department of Conservation administered the reserve. The plan proposed management of the reserve for recreation and enjoyment by the public, especially for its value as a picnicking and short-term camping area. Bylaws were included in the management plan to assist with enforcement of reserve policies.

Important management issues include the protection and enhancement of native vegetation remnants, enforcement of camping restrictions to prevent long-term camping, and the maintenance of sufficient areas for picnicking and day use.

History

The area was designated as a reserve in 1915 and held in trust as reserve land until 1960 when it transferred to the Crown. The reserve was then vested in the Tasman District Council in 1989.

The reserve is a strip of land bordered to the west by Cliff Road, to the north by a residential section, and to the west by the sea. An area of land bordering the reserve to the south contains the site of a Maori pa.

Lake Killarney Reserve, Takaka

Amenities

Picnic

The reserve stands as a dividing point between the residential sections and the rural land to the east and now provides an important open water habitat for wildlife.

Swimming is not allowed in the Lake.

Pest fish species have been eradicated from the Lake and the reintroduced native fish species are doing well.

Around the Lake are plantings of raupo, willow, mahoe and ti tree. Kahikatea and Totara have also been planted in the area.

History

When Golden Bay residents Nick and Helen Hodgkinson bought a section at the southern end of the lake around 30 years ago, the area was a popular spot for illegal rubbish dumping, it wasn't fenced and neighbouring cattle were often seen grazing there, with the occasional unfortunate one getting stuck in the lakeside mud.

Eventually Mr Hodgkinson, who at that time was co-ordinating the old Project Employment Programme (PEP) suggested the reserve as a project and in conjunction with the Golden Bay County Council, the clean up got underway.

Rubbish was cleared from the land and the lake and the reserve was fenced. Many willows and scrubby trees were cleared, a walking track was made and bollards were put in. Seating areas were created and signs made. Mr Hodgkinson says he remembers the lake being very clear and he suspects it is fed by an underground spring. It's up to 40 feet deep in places and was a favourite swimming hole for children in years gone by.

The land surrounding the Lake was originally farmland owned by Bracket Bickley and was designated as a reserve as the result of a subdivision in 1967. Councillor Pat Reilly and resident Brownie Page got together and suggested the name Lake Killarney, after the lake of the same name in Ireland.

Behind the courts and skatepark lies a large grass area that gets packed out with stalls and people each year for the famous Mapua Easter Fair. During winter it becomes the football field for local teams.

History

The Mapua Bowling Club is also now located on the Reserve, having shifted there in 2005. It was in fact a return home because the club had originally been located on the reserve up until 1933 when it moved away due to problems growing suitable turf to play on.

Records are a bit unclear on when the existing reserve was established but it was some time before 1948. The current recreation reserve was formed following a land swap with the first ever reserve in Mapua which was on the corner of Toru and Iwa Streets and was given by Mr. F. Ledger, who originally surveyed and set out the settlement of Mapua. But by 1948 it had been swapped for the land adjacent to the hall.

By 1950 the playing field area had been levelled and sown and the tennis courts were constructed with the help of a Ministry of Lands 300 pound grant.

In 1956 the children’s play area was developed and has been updated and well used since. In 1978 a further five acres was added to the reserve as a contribution from the developer of a residential subdivision, bringing the reserve to its current size.

The only facility present within the reserve is a walking track that provides an interesting introduction to the forest on the lower slopes. Other facilities, such as toilets and picnic tables, are present on the adjoining McKee Memorial Recreation Reserve.

Dog Prohibited Area

Dogs are prohibited on this reserve.

There are many places within Tasman District to exercise your dog, both on and off the leash. Dogs are prohibited in several beach and reserve areas, and other areas require leash control.

Vegetation

The reserve covers an eroded scarp of Moutere Gravels, comprising rounded pebbles in a silt and clay matrix. It supports a substantial remnant of coastal forest dominated by titoki (Alectryon excelsus). Other important canopy species are black beech (on upper slopes), hinau, lemonwood, matai, and pigeonwood. Karaka, ngaio, lowland ribbonwood, and kowhai are present on the lower margins of the forest. Important sub-canopy species include ponga (Cyathea dealbata), Lophomyrtus obcordata, supplejack, and mahoe. Putaputaweta and akeake are present on the upper slopes.

This area of forest is notable as an important remnant of coastal forest in an area where such forest is substantially depleted. It provides important habitat for native bird species, including kereru. Modified coastal vegetation north of the reserve on the Moutere Bluff, and south of the reserve alongside State Highway 60 and within Pine Hill Heights Reserve, complement the forest protected within the McKee Memorial Scenic Reserve.

History

The late Arthur McKee originally reserved the forested area as McKee Bush. Ownership transferred to the Crown after his death in 1947 and the area was declared a Domain in 1948. Land owned by the Automobile Association was added to the reserve in 1956 to form the present McKee Memorial Scenic Reserve and Recreation Reserve.

Management

Control and management of the reserve was vested in the Tasman District Council in 1992 for a term of three years. Continued control and management of the reserve is subject to prior approval of an annual work plan by the Department of Conservation.

A management plan for both the recreation reserve and the scenic reserve was approved in 1989 . This plan sets out detailed policies and bylaws for reserve management.

The McKee Memorial Reserves Committee assists with the management and development of the reserve.

Meads Recreation Reserve, Lee Valley

Amenities

Picnic

Toilets

Swimming

River

The reserve is a very popular recreation area, especially for swimming and picnicking during the summer months. It borders an attractive section of the Lee River with several swimming holes.

Vegetation

A large part of the reserve is maintained as mown grass, with clumps of kanuka and smaller clumps of beech trees. A native mistletoe (Ileostylis micranthus) is present in the reserve.

History

The former Waimea County Council purchased this area for a recreation reserve in 1976, and a draft management plan was prepared in 1985 . The plan proposed protection and enhancement of flora and fauna while providing recreational access to the Lee River.

Management

Important management issues include the continued control of aggressive weeds, further development of recreational facilities, and the protection of native vegetation, especially the forest remnant at the southern end of the reserve.

All together the three reserves cover over seven hectares so there is plenty of place to spread out for games, picnicking, swimming or just relaxing.

History

The Bocce court was built in association with the Motueka Special Olympic Association who were keen to see an outdoor venue for the sport established. Council funded the project and the court is now open for public use as well as being used by the Special Olympics group each weekend. It’s a very pleasant spot for a game of petanque or bocce.

Watersports

The main beach at Rabbit Island is a safe swimming location, popular with locals and tourists. The back beach has a boat ramp adjacent to a water skiing area. Both beaches are monitored as part of the Swimming Water Quality monitoring programme.

Walking

Fishing

The area around the Rabbit Island bridge is a popular spot for white-baiters, while surf-casting can be productive from the front beach.

Management

The reserve is managed by Tasman District Council. Revenue from the forestry operation enables the Council to provide and maintan the public facilities. No other commercial activity of any kind is permitted on the Island.

Boat Ramp

There is a boat ramp on Rabbit Island at Boat Ramp Road. The ramp gives access to the popular water ski area towards the eastern end of the Island, sheltered from the sea winds. Turn at the sign past the second Caretaker's house. The ski area is also easily accessible by boat from the Monaco Boat Ramp, near Stoke. Some knowledge of the deep-water channels is essential for safe boating in these tidal waters.

Equestrian Park

Rough Island is home to a fabulous equestrian facility catering for different riding groups and individuals. It has dressage and western arenas, cross-country and show jumps as well as wonderful riding trails through the forestry. Horses are also permitted on the southern end of Rabbit Island beach.

History

At some time during the early 1920s the beach at Motueka was considered dangerous for bathing as there were sharks in the bay. In 1926 money was raised by a gala to enclose an area with galvanised wire.

This soon rusted away in the salt water, so in 1938 a pool was built with three concrete walls and wings extending up the beach which made the pool the depth of the high tide. There was no concrete bottom to the pool just the beach sand. Eventually the wings were removed by order of the Harbour Board as it was believed they were causing erosion.

In 1950 a Domain Board was formed. The area behind the baths was levelled and grassed, toilets were installed and a short time later the fourth wall of the pool was built.

By 1992 the baths had deteriorated badly so once more a committee was formed to upgrade the whole area. A concrete floor was added to the baths with steps at both ends and a paddling pool was included. A floodgate, childproof gates in the fence around the pool, decking on the shore side and a walkway to the beach were also added. In the domain itself a new unit containing changing rooms and toilets was built to replace the old facilities and night lighting was installed.

This project was achieved through various grants and donations and the goodwill of local businesses who gave goods and services. The Tasman District Council matched the fundraising dollar for dollar and, like previous projects, a vast amount of volunteer work helped ensure the project was completed.

Sanctuary Ponds Reserve, Motueka

Amenities

Walking

Picnic

Sanctuary Ponds Reserve is a great place to relax and picnic. It's a favourite spot for Wedding photos and the annual Teddy Bears Picnic is held there. A wide variety of bird life is attracted to the wetland style environment.

Plantings

The Ponds have lovely plantings of Maples, azaleas, rhododendrons, lavender, tulips and agapanthas. The thousands of bulbs that have been planted create an amazing display every spring.

History

Soroptimists International, Motueka and Districts Club, made a submission to Council to create an English style park around the pond. The project was to tie in with the Soroptimists International Jubilee that was being celebrated in 1995. Council readily accepted the suggestion and the offer of help that went with it. The result was the Soroptimists and members of Keep Motueka Beautiful were involved in the initial planting and the Soroptimists involvement has continued.

Soroptimists of Motueka have been extremely generous in donating their time to the plantings and maintenance at Sanctuary Ponds and they contribute between 200 - 300 work hours a year with formal and informal working bees. They also supply some of the trees, plants and shrubs through their fundraising efforts.

The hard work by the Soroptimists Club has also been officially recognised, as they were joint winners of the Community and Individual section in the Tasman District Council Environmental Awards in 2001.

The Story of the Sundial

The sundial in Richmond’s Sundial Square has been a feature of the town since it was unveiled by then Mayor Kerry Marshall on 26 November 1994.

It was designed by engineer and amateur astronomer Peter Knowles, who started looking for something interesting to put in his garden and ended up with a one of a kind community-funded sculpture. The sundial is constructed from mild and stainless steel, it weighs approximately 800 kilograms, stands 2.2 metres high, and 1.7 metres wide. This is a precision sundial that can be accurately read within 10 seconds of the actual time

Peter got the idea of the sundial after watching a documentary by the late Carl Sagan (a distinguished American astronomer) about the Anasazi Indians, who lived in the South Western United States around 3,000 years ago. The Anasazi built stone temples that were aligned to the sun and tracked the seasons through the year.

The sundial took four years to design and build, and was manufactured by Trinder Engineering. The cost of $27,000 was covered by a community fundraising effort and contributions from the Tasman District Council.

Peter has designed the sundial to specifically work in Richmond, if it was moved more than 100 metres it would no longer work correctly. The sundial is equatorial, which means it is aligned to the earth’s polar access.

Carl Sagan talks about the Anasazi and their sun calendars on Youtube

Picnic

The large number of trees provides ample shade even on the hottest days and there are picnic tables, toilet facilities and an exciting adventure playground.

Walking

Thorp Bush has a number of flat, well maintained walking tracks meandering through the trees and you'll see and hear a variety of bird life if you take the time to explore them. The forest remnant on the Reserve is extremely valuable in conservation terms. It supports kahikatea, titoki, totara, matai, kowhai, tarata, kaikomato, ti tree and what is thought to the last remaining specimen of white maire in the Motueka District.

You'll discover a tranquil wonderland, Thorp Bush. includes the largest remnant of lowland podocarp - hardwood forest that once covered the Motueka Plain, making it a very special place in terms of conservation.

History

The bulk of the reserve was vested to Council in 1952 from the estate of F.W. Thorp. A small section at the eastern edge became part of the Reserve much later in 1993.

The Thorp family has a long association with Motueka. Charles Thorp arrived there in 1842 on the ship Olympia, having bought his land from a map in London. He married and raised a family but sadly only one of his three children survived into adulthood. Frederick William (F.W.) Thorp went on to become Mayor of Motueka Borough from 1904 till 1911 when he died aged fifty. His widow and their two daughters, Helen and Ethel stayed on at the family estate until the 1950's. As well as the land that was gifted to Council, another area was purchased by the Golf Club.

Thorp Bush is situated on Woodlands Avenue and in fact this road actually runs through the south western corner of the Reserve. It's interesting to know that timber was milled from this area in times gone by but luckily some excellent tree specimens remain.

Management

The reserve is managed by Tasman District Council.

Removal of pest plants in the reserve is planned a long with a revegetation programme. New trees and shrubs are being planted to improve the native habitat in the reserve and provide a good food source to attract birds to the area. This project also includes the creation of a network of paths linking clearings for sheltered picnic spots and providing access to the river.

History

The late John Mitchell, well known in the area for his many community plantings, helped create a plantation of eucalypts in the reserve, many of which are still standing.

The land is owned by Department of Conservation but was vested in Council as a reserve in 1985 and is a popular picnic and recreation area as well as serving as a rest area for drivers.

Wakefield Recreation Reserve, Wakefield

Amenities

Toilets

Walking

River

Sportsground

Sport

The Reserve covers just over four hectares and it is being extremely well used by the community. There are four tennis courts as well as the tennis clubrooms. There’s an indoor shooting range, the clubrooms of the football club and playing fields for football and rugby. In the western end of the reserve a BMX track has been created beneath the trees. Floodlights on the playing fields allow for night practices to be held.

The Wakefield Recreation Reserve isn’t all about sport though. It’s the venue for the very popular Fire Service Fireworks Display every Guy Fawkes and for the past couple of years has been home to the local Play Centre fundraising fair as well.

Walking

More recently extra parking and access to the reserve has been created from Pigeon Valley Road. From here there’s also a track down to the Wai-iti River. Another more recent addition is a walkway that links up to Edward Baigent Reserve. This was made possible by Richard Martin generously refencing his property to allow access along the river to the Reserve.

History

The reserve has its own special place in the history of Wakefield too. It was under one of the large totara trees that early settler Edward Baigent slept in 1843 on his first night in the area. A plaque and a young totara that was planted by Edward Baigent’s descendants in 1992 mark this site.

Another memorial that graces the reserve is the gate on the eastern corner. It was erected in recognition of Lieut. Col. W.R. Pearless’ contribution to the district and services in the Boer War and World War 1.

Management

The Wakefield Recreation Reserve Management Committee carries out all the day-to-day maintenance and development of the reserve on Council’s behalf.

Washbourn Gardens, Richmond

Amenities

Picnic

Toilets (including fully accessible)

Display House

Historic Building

Garden Features

The Fuchsia House was proposed by the Waimea South Garden Club and funding came from most other garden clubs in the district and the Fuschia Society. It was built by the Richmond Borough Council in 1987. The fuchsias thrive in this environment and put on a spectacular show of colour.

The Old Richmond Gaol is a point of historical interest. It was relocated to it's current site in the gardens in 1992 and restored thanks to the joint efforts of Richmond Rotary and Tasman District Council.

The Fernery was completed in 1996 and was a project of Friends of Washbourn Gardens.

The Begonia House - another Rotary project, is an amazing sight during the summer months with over 200 potted begonias and hanging baskets blazing a mass of vibrant colours. The begonias in the house are looked after by the Ian Thorn Memorial Begonia Trust. In winter the display is created by beautiful orchids, many of which were donated by Mr Harvey.

The Currie Gazebo was completed in 2000 after a huge fundraising effort, again by the Friends of Washbourn Gardens and a generous contribution from Tasman District Council. It's a popular spot for wedding photographs, especially over summer.

Picture of Washbourn Gardens, Richmond

History

The Gardens take their name from Doctor Washbourn who owned the house and all the land right up to Hill Street in the early part of last century. The house was built in 1924 but sadly Doctor Washbourn died in 1926. Doctor Currie then purchased the property and he was responsible for a lot of the planting on the property. Dr Currie also added a tennis court, croquet court, glasshouse, an extensive rose garden, water lily pond and a large vegetable garden. He also kept cows and some hens on the property and did much of the work himself but still needed to employ a full time gardener. In these pre-war days it must have been one of the most stunning gardens in the area and the regular Saturday Tennis parties held there were a highlight of the town's social calendar. Doctor Currie died in 1939 and ownership of the property passed to his widow, and then in turn his son, Ted Currie who both worked hard to maintain the wonderful garden that had been created. The area had been zoned by Council as a future public park, both for it's proximity to town and so it could be used as a flood retention site to help alleviate the flooding problem that sometimes saw floodwaters come down as far as Queen Street. The area in the gardens where the duck pond is located works as a flood retention pond and the slipway at the top of it allows any further water to drain safely away. Mr Currie sold this portion of the property to Council in 1976 and the rest of the land and house was sold to council in 1987 but the house and it's immediate land was sold two years later. The Gardens have been under Council control since that time and currently all the maintenance work is contracted out.

Friends of Washbourn Gardens were formed in 1993 and had been the driving force behind a lot of the improvements in the gardens, until recently when they disbanded. They held an annual fete to help raise funds for various projects.

Management

Washbourn Gardens is managed by Tasman District Council.

If you would like to hold an event in the Gardens please contact the Tasman District Council
