Uruwhenua Reserve, Takaka

Golden Bay’s Uruwhenua Reserve is one of those special spots just tucked away off the main road. This three hectare reserve lies between the Takaka River and East Takaka Road, just off SH60 – look for the sign at the turn off just before Lindsay’s Bridge.

Amenities

  • Picnic
  • Toilet
  • River

The gravel and grassed area beside the bridge is actually private land and the very generous owners are happy for it to be used as a roadside rest area. The true boundary of Uruwhenua Reserve starts at the fence near the trees and toilet. There are picnic tables on the reserve.

Revegetation Programme

Removal of pest plants in the reserve is planned a long with a revegetation programme. New trees and shrubs are being planted to improve the native habitat in the reserve and provide a good food source to attract birds to the area. This project also includes the creation of a network of paths linking clearings for sheltered picnic spots and providing access to the river.

History

The late John Mitchell, well known in the area for his many community plantings, helped create a plantation of eucalypts in the reserve, many of which are still standing.

The land is owned by Department of Conservation but was vested in Council as a reserve in 1985 and is a popular picnic and recreation area as well as serving as a rest area for drivers.
