Older Persons

This page outlines strategies and initiatives for older people in our communities.

The Tasman District has a higher percentage of its population aged over 65 (13.6%) compared with the national percentage over 65 (12.3%). Tasman District Council therefore needs to ensure issues relevant to older persons are given high priority.

Nelson Tasman Positive Ageing Forum

The Nelson Tasman Positive Ageing Forum's role is to provide an opportunity for older persons and agencies who work for and with them to enable residents of Nelson Tasman to age positively.

To promote positive ageing, Tasman District Council must regularly consult older people on issues of interest. Quarterly advocacy forums are held for older people and key agencies to address older people’s issues in Tasman District and Nelson City.

Next Meeting: Monday 28 May 2012, 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm, Tasman District Council, 189 Queen Street, Richmond. All welcome.

Nelson Tasman Positive Ageing Strategy

The strategy was developed to give direction to meeting the needs of older people in the district. The Nelson Tasman Positive Ageing Policy is due to be updated to better respond to the needs of older people in the region.

Positive Ageing Expos

The Positive Ageing Expos raise awareness about health and recreation services in the community for older people.  Currently these are held in Golden Bay, Motueka and Richmond.

Next Positive Aging Forum, Monday 23 April 2012, 10am - 3pm at the Headingly Centre, Headingly Lane Richmond.

Outstanding Community Awards

These awards recognise and celebrate the older people who have given long-term outstanding service to the community (more than 20 years).  Nominations are open throughout the year closing in June. The awards ceremony is held in August.
