Tasman Youth Council

This page details the activities and initiatives of the Tasman Youth Council, which offers young people the chance to have input into how Council supports young people in the Tasman District.

About the Tasman Youth Council

The Tasman Youth Council (TYC) was established in 1998 after local young people told council they wanted to have their voices heard and their interests taken seriously.

There are four regional clusters -  Waimea, Motueka, Golden Bay and Murchison. Each cluster carries out projects and initiatives relevant to the needs expressed by young people in their communities.

A maximum of 30 members are recruited each year. Each member is offered youth leadership and development opportunities to help them fulfil their role.

Relationship with Tasman District Council

The Tasman Youth Council sits within the Community Services Department. Regular meetings with the Community Services Committee give both parties an opportunity to ask relevant questions and discuss solutions to issues.

What Does the Tasman Youth Council Do?

The Tasman Youth Council helps with decision making and planning around the provision of services and facilities for young people. Young people are supported to have their say and have their views heard informally and through formal submissions to Council,

Projects and Initiatives

Jam Online

One of the Tasman Youth Council's  major achievements is Jam Online - a website for young people.

The website replaces Jam Mag, the magazine which scooped a national award at the 2010 Youth and Local Government Conference for ‘Best Collaborative Project’. Jam Online is updated all the time.

The Jam

The Jam is a weekly radio show on Fresh FM which is sponsored by the Tasman Youth Council. The show looks at youth issues, and informs listeners about local and regional youth activities.

Youth Week

A central focus each year is the celebration of Youth Week. Youth Week publicly acknowledges the role young people play in our communities, and encourages others to get involved, share their opinions, showcase their creativity and talent, and above all, have fun.

Youth Volunteer Recognition

The voluntary efforts of local Young people contributing and making a positive difference to our communities are officially recognised at the annual Nelson-Tasman Youth Volunteer Recognition Celebration Evening.  The Tasman Youth Council support the recognition scheme and play a central role celebration evening.
