Brightwater - Ellis Street Improvements

This page outlines plans for improvements to Ellis Street, Brightwater.

Background

Brightwater is a rapidly-growing community and with that comes some pressures on the main route through the village – Ellis Street.

We want to make sure Ellis Street - which is home to Brightwater School, the village shopping precinct, and forms part of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail - is safe for all users, as well as being an attractive public space.

To achieve that, we are looking at options for streetscaping and other improvements to Ellis Street.

Progress

As part of the consultation process with the community, Brightwater School students were involved in some early brainstorming and a public consultation day was held to seek input and ideas for the town centre upgrade.  Many common themes were expressed, such as less heavy traffic and the introduction of a lower speed environment.

A working group was established, made up of representative from local business, the school, residents’ association, police, heavy haulage companies and others. Their aim is to achieve a rich, successful design that reflects the community’s requirements and values.

Concept designs

The findings from the working group and public consultation were passed on to the urban designer, Opus, to begin the design process.  Concept plans have now been prepared and can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

Timeline

  • December 2017 - Project approved by Council for inclusion in the Long Term Plan
  • February 2018 - Concept design completed
  • June 2018 - Detailed design completed
  • Date for construction are yet to be scheduled.
