Lower Queen Street Pipe Upgrade Project

This page provides details about a project to upgrade and replace pipes in Lower Queen Street, Richmond.

About the Project

We are upsizing a stormwater pipe, replacing a water main that is due for renewal and installing a new sewer main along Lower Queen Street. This work is needed to service new residential development and other future growth in the area The work involves digging a trench on the southern side of Lower Queen Street in order to install the new pipes and services.  We expect to resurface the whole of the west-bound lane.

Fibre and phone connections will be moved to create space for the new pipes, and we are working with Chorus and Network Tasman to install future service ducts at the same time. We are working with Chorus to make sure existing connections are maintained while the work takes place.

This project is not directly related to the stormwater upgrade taking place along Queen Street between Gladstone and Salisbury roads, however, some of the construction work will be happening at the same time.

Concept Plan

Progress

We are currently in the concept stage to determine the exact location of the pipes and ducts.  Before construction can start we need to confirm the pipe alignment and complete the design work, obtain relevant consents and any land agreements. Work on the water and sewer pipes will begin in September 2017 and construction is likely to take four to six months. Work on the stormwater pipes will be undertaken in 2018.
