Richmond Water Main Renewals

This page outlines the work we are carrying out to replace ageing water mains in Richmond in 2017.

About the Project

From April 2017, water pipe renewal work began in Richmond, covering D’arcy Street, Fauchelle Avenue, Florence, Elizabeth and Herbert Streets.  This work is expected to be complete by early November.

Footpaths and car parks affected

At times during the works, access to the footpath and some car parks will be affected. Please avoid the coned off areas and follow signage and instructions. Traffic will be restricted to one lane for short periods of time throughout construction. Your patience is appreciated.

The existing pipes in these streets have reached an age where they are showing signs of deterioration and need to be replaced to avoid disruption to residents' water supply. The renewal of these old watermains is part of our ongoing water pipeline replacement progromme to keep the water reticulation network well maintained.

Water Meter Replacements

At the same time, we will replace ageing water meters on these streets. The meters in some areas have reached an age where they are breaking down, not working efficiently or have reduced accuracy. The loss of accuracy can affect the way we manage our water resources, and how the costs of water supply are charged across the community.

How Will I Know if My Water Meter Will be Replaced?

It is most likely that your meter will be replaced, unless you have a new ‘manifold’ style meter that has recently been installed.

If your meter is one of those scheduled for replacement, you will receive a letter to notify you prior to the work being done. The water supply to your property will need to be shut off for a short period of time, usually between the hours of 9am and 3pm.  The letter will include details on the timing, what’s involved, and who to contact if you have any queries.

Proposed Timeline

Ching Contracting has been awarded the contract to complete this work, and is planning to start work in April and be complete by November 2017.

The work is programmed to progress street-by-street, with the following approximate timeframes:

  • D’arcy Street – early April to end of May
  • Florence Street - late May to end of June
  • Fauchelle Ave – early July to mid August
  • Herbert Street – late-August to mid-September
  • Elizabeth Street – late-September to mid-November
