Takaka to Pohara Cycleway Connection

This page details the Takaka to Pohara Cycle Connection and provides regular updates.

Background

Cycling has been growing in popularity, and more and more people living in the Pohara/Tata area are wanting to cycle, both for commuting to Takaka and for recreation purposes.  During the holiday period, over 1000 holiday-makers congregate in the area and around a quarter of those will have a bicycle.  With the rising popularity of the Great Taste trail, that number is set to increase steadily.

Our current infrastructure does not safely support this increase, so we are building a new cycleway from Takaka to Pohara, to enable cyclists to ride safely between the beaches and the township of Takaka.  To achieve this, our intention is for majority of the cycle way to be off-road.

Generally, the cycleway is seen as a high priority for the community and around 1500 signatures have been collected locally in support of the project.  A local Golden Bay working group has been helping Council to develop a detailed plan for the cycle/walkway connection. Our agreed priorities are:

  • To provide children with a safe way to get to school;
  • To provide the public with a safe way to get from Takaka to Pohara;
  • To provide tourists with a safe way to explore the area..
