Proposed Closure of Crescent Street at Wensley Road

Tasman District Council is investigating closing Crescent Street at the intersection with Wensley Road in Richmond for safety reasons.

The Crescent Street approach to the intersection with Wensley Road is very steep with a grade of approximately 1-in-5, and the pedestrian pram ramps are also steeper than ideal, making the intersection difficult to use for both motorists and pedestrians.

The visibility for drivers exiting Crescent Street on to Wensley Road is poor and combined with a difficult start from a stopped position whilst on a steep grade supports the low vehicle numbers surveyed using it.

Submissions and Final Recommendation

Public submissions on this proposal closed on 31 January 2011. Staff will be considering all submissions and a report with a final recommendation for this proposal will be presented to the Engineering Services Committee on 28 April 2011.

Council is Considering Two Options for the Crescent Street / Wensley Road Intersection

Closing off the intersection to all traffic movements will allow safer and improved pedestrian access along Wensley Road as well as safer travel for motorists and cyclists on Wensley Road by eliminating turning and crossing traffic in this vicinity.

First Option

The first and preferred option is to close off the intersection of Crescent Street at Wensley Road to all vehicle movements. Select the map below for a larger image of the proposed street layout.

Second Option

The second option is to allow drivers to turn into Crescent Street from Wensley Road but to prevent traffic from turning out on to Wensley Road or cross diagonally to access Waverley Street. Select the map below for a larger image of the proposed street layout.
