Rivers based eco tourism has developed over the past 20 years and is now a main economic driver for Murchison. It is growing rapidly. Murchison has an international reputation for brown trout fishing with the Maruia, Buller and Matakitaki rivers in the top four fishing rivers in the Tasman District.

Murchison is one of the top 10 white-water kayaking destinations in the world with the Middle Matakitaki run being the most kayaked stretch of water in the southern hemisphere. There are 510 bed nights available in Murchison ranging from 5-star lodges to cabins, plus caravan and tent sites.
