Accessibility for All

Good Access = Good Business

During 2012, the A4A members have been working on an accessibility checklist for businesses. The resulting brochure was launched at the December meeting of the forum. The brochure was produced with support from Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council.

Good Access = Good Business

Accessibility Tour - November 2011

In November 2011 A4A members along with Tasman District and Nelson City Councillors investigated accessibility issues in the Richmond town centre. Particpants used wheelchairs, mobility scooters, crutches and sight impairment glasses to gain a firsthand experience of the challenges faced by those with an impairment or limited mobility.

Accessibility tour of Richmond - 4 November 2011

Accessible Beach Chairs

A4A with help from CCS Disability Action, successfully sought funding in 2011 to purchase two accessible beach chairs. These can be loaned out from CCS Disability Action in Nelson.

Footpaths

Council recognises the importance of walking and promotes a pedestrian-friendly built environment. Walking routes should be well-designed, user friendly and safe. A walking environment designed with the needs of mobility and visually impaired pedestrians in mind is also important to Tasman District Council.

Footpaths in Tasman District are maintained by the Engineering Services Department, Phone: 03 543 8400.

You are able to use any designated mobility car parks, whether public or private (eg Richmond Mall). All parking is free in the Tasman District but time limits do apply. Where time limits apply, there will be an appropriate sign. Generally, vehicles parked in mobility parks receive an extra 50% amount of time indicated by the sign. For example if a sign states P60, someone with a Mobility Parking Permit will be allowed to park in that space for 90 minutes. If no accessible parks are available people with Mobility Parking Permits can use ordinary parks and receive the same courtesy regarding time.

Mobility Scooters

Mobility Scooters

While you do not need a drivers licence to operate a mobility scooter there are some legal requirements and courtesy tips to help you:

You must operate your mobility scooter or power chair in a careful and considerate manner.

You must use the footpath when one is readily accessible and travel at a speed that does not endangers others.

It is illegal for you to ride, or let any person ride, in a way that may cause you or them injury.

Keep left, pass on the right. Pass on the right.

Warn when approaching others from behind (some scooters are silent and so might not be heard by people who are hearing impaired).

Move off a shared path if you have stopped so others can pass.

The NZ Transport Agency has compiled a booklet "Keeping Mobile – How to use your Mobility Scooter or Power Chair Safely". You can obtain a copy by:

Phoning 0800 699 000

Total Mobility

Total Mobility Passenger Transport

Total Mobility is a door to door passenger transport scheme for people with disabilities. The scheme allows them to use regular taxi vehicles and modified taxis for wheelchair access. The aim is to increase the mobility of those with disabilities in the Nelson Tasman region.

The Total Mobility scheme is administered by Nelson City Council, with Tasman District Council contributing to the budget. The local share is funded via rates and the remainder comes through New Zealand Transport Agency funding.

How does the scheme work?

Eligible persons can apply to receive a discount (subject to local conditions) on their taxi fare by way of Total Mobility vouchers. The vouchers can be used in other regions of New Zealand where a local authority operates the scheme subject to that authority's conditions. The discount rate is currently 50% to a maximum discount of $10 per trip.

Who can use Total Mobility?

The scheme is only available to people with a disability which impairs their ability to a level that prevents them from using a public bus service or requires the constant assistance of another person. All applicants are assessed for eligibility by an approved agency.

Am I eligible?

Riding securely.

Getting off the transport.

Getting to the destination.

Being unable to handle money to purchase the required fare.

Who can Assess my eligibility?
