The Cobb dam Road in Golden Bay has reopened.
Tasman District Council has been working closely with the co-owners of the road, Trustpower and the Department of Conservation, to re-open the road to the public and restore access to the Cobb reservoir and as an entrance to Kahurangi National Park.
The work has been ongoing since ex-cyclone Gita, with the recovery work made all the more difficult due to the size of the slips and instability of the areas being worked on. Several of the larger landslide areas slipped multiple times over winter, delaying progress further.
It is likely that further work will be needed in due course because of the inherent residual instability of some sections of the road.
While the road is being prepared to be fit for purpose for public access, care should be taken at all times especially in wet weather which will heighten the risk of slips and fallen trees on the road.
Tasman District Council, through agreement with Trustpower and DoC, are responsible for routine road maintenance of Cobb Dam Rd, between the end of Cobb Valley Rd and the Cobb reservoir.
