Our roles and responsibilities

Your rates bill pays for a huge variety of services - this section explains our roles and responsibilities as a council.

We are a public benefit entity - our primary objective is to provide goods and services for community or social benefit.

We're required to make decisions and set directions for promoting the social, cultural, environmental and economic wellbeing of our community. It is our responsibility to lead, provide for and contribute to the good governance of the community.

One rate, two roles

Most New Zealand property owners pay two rates - the territorial and the regional. Tasman ratepayers pay just one, a combined rate, as a result of the services being provided by one authority.
