Second Hand Sunday

Second Hand Sunday is a joint event by the Nelson City and the Tasman District Councils to help re-home useful household goods for free.

Across the region,

Second Hand Sunday will return on 16 February 2025.

What is Second Hand Sunday?

It's a way to re-home household goods for free - anything from chairs, books, clothing, or leftover bits and pieces from building projects. Please don't put out food, dangerous goods like faulty electrical equipment, or chemicals.

The events take place rain or shine, and in the event of bad weather, it is up to the householder whether they put their items out or not.

I have items to offer - what do I need to do?

  • Register via this page on the Nelson City Council website(external link). Be aware that registration typically opens a month before each Second Hand Sunday event.
  • Print one of the posters listed below so people can see you are involved.
  • On Second Hand Sunday itself, at 9 am, put your items out on your driveway or front lawn. After 2 pm, responsibly remove any uncollected items from your driveway or front lawn. If you have anything left after the event, find other ways to dispose of things.

I want to go foraging for items - what do I need to do?

  • Download the list of address that will be available here from midday on the Friday before the event. A Google map showing of the locations will also be available.
  • Simply visit addresses and collect any items you want on the day between 9 am and 2 pm.
  • Wait until 9 am before you start foraging, to give everyone a fair chance.
  • Please do not enter a property if there are no items outside on the day.
  • If you like the look of something, take the whole item. Don't deconstruct or take only parts of an item.
  • Pass on a friendly thanks if you see the property owner, and have fun foraging!
