What is the Flood Notification System about?

Tasman District Council runs a live river monitoring network across the major rivers of the region. The information from this network can give early warning of high river levels.

Through use of the council’s Flood Notification System alerts of high river levels can be sent direct to your phone. By signing up to this system you can choose which alerts you wish to receive either by text message, voice call to a mobile or landline, or an email.

You can sign up to receive alerts here(external link).

Which site should I choose?
What notification level is right for me ?

Every individual situation is different and so the onus is on the user to understand the relationship with river heights for their location. The map below shows the locations of sites on the river network provided through the Flood Notification System. In general, the further upstream you go from your location the more warning time you will have but the less consistent will the relationship be between the river height and what occurs at your location.

Most sites will have 2 or 3 levels available, if you feel you are in a more vulnerable situation choose the lowest available. If you are concerned only about larger sized floods, then could choose a higher level. If in doubt start with a lower level, you can always come back and change it later if it is not right for you. There is no limit to the number of sites or levels you can choose.
